A Tour of an 18th Century Apartment in Cannes

Perched on the hills above France’s Cannes harbor, this 18th-century Côte d’Azur apartment required extensive restoration. A professional German couple purchased it as a convenient pied-à-terre and hired interior designer Juliette Byrne, with whom they had worked before. With this in mind, Juliette and her design team focused on blending classical architecture with contemporary style, aiming to capture the grandeur of Cannes.

The Grand Entrance

From the moment you step inside, the entrance reflects the luxury of Cannes. The building’s foyer, adorned with palm-style foliage in elegant urns, sets a grand tone. To enhance this space, we transformed the entrance hall into a palatial area with a ceiling painted in Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue. This rich color mirrors the Cannes harbor. In addition, Juliette Byrne and her team incorporated storage with Tom Faulkner handles, while Arteriors wall lights added both functionality and style. A round navy blue pouf in suede and boucle tweed brings texture and a touch of sophistication to the space.

Reviving a Room with a View

As you move into the open-plan reception room, the stunning views over Cannes and the Côte d’Azur immediately captivate. We thoughtfully positioned seating toward the French doors and Juliet balcony to maximize these vistas. Additionally, striped awnings outside enhance the Southern France ambiance and provide necessary shade. At the heart of the room, the Tateyama sofa from Secolo, with its curved, low-back seating, commands attention. Brushed brass detailing flows seamlessly into sculptural side tables. Complementing this, textured Eichholtz armchairs and eclectic cushions complete the look. Meanwhile, a circular metal drum table from Arteriors serves as a focal point, tying the room together.

Custom Culinary Kitchen

Transitioning to the kitchen, practicality meets refinement. We strategically placed the central island near a floor-to-ceiling window, offering breathtaking views. Sculptural displays the Lily bar stools from Secolo add an artistic touch to the space. Additionally, a dedicated ice bucket-style sink keeps champagne perfectly chilled. To maintain the open-plan spirit, we added decorative bi-fold doors, allowing the kitchen to be concealed when desired. A Tom Faulkner Papillon console table further connects the kitchen to the living area with opulent style.

Elegance Primary Bedroom

Moving into the master bedroom, the serene retreat awaits. A pocket door leads to a king-size Robert Langford bed, framed by a padded headboard upholstered in blush suede by Elitis. Moreover, antique mirrors reflect views of the Côte d’Azur, enhancing the sense of space. Onyx-finished wall lights from LuxDeco provide a soft, ambient glow. Fully fitted wardrobes with linen-effect interiors offer ample storage, ensuring every item has its place. A wall-hung dressing table, stool, and a feature brass pendant from Rose Uniacke complete the room, adding to its luxurious feel.

Modern Wet Room

Finally, the wet room combines modern luxury with classic touches. Fluted cabinetry and full-height mirrors create an elegant space, while Porta Romana Toucan wall lights in an antique finish add a playful element. Brushed antique brass fittings and a slimline Carrara faux marble vanity top complete the room. In addition, neutral porcelain-tiled flooring ties everything together, ensuring a cohesive design throughout.

A Perfectly Balanced Retreat

In conclusion, Juliette Byrne’s renovation in Cannes beautifully blends modern comforts with classical elegance. The result is a chic retreat, true to its roots, offering a luxurious and stylish sanctuary in the heart of the Côte d’Azur. Every detail, from restored original features to bespoke modern touches, creates a space that is both timeless and contemporary.
